HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – College of Charleston earned its fifth CAA series win of the season by taking the rubber game from Hofstra by a score of 2-0 on Saturday.
Mackenzie Mathis continued her outstanding work in the circle in conference play. The freshman tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks for her third shutout, sixth win and seventh complete game against CAA opponents while lowering her ERA to 1.45.
The Cougars (24-23, 14-7 CAA) solidified their hold on fifth place in the CAA while their 14 conference wins are the most since going 14-4 in 2014. That was also the last time Charleston earned five conference series wins in a season.
Game Summary
- With two outs in the third, Halle Cannon doubled and moved to third on a bunt single by Jay Wrightsman.
- Wrightsman then got into a rundown between first and second, allowing Cannon to come across with the first run of the game.
- In the fourth, Austy Miller extended her hitting streak to nine with a double and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Kennedy Rhue.
- Mathis did not need much run support as she retired the side in order four times and the eight strikeouts were two shy of her season high.
- Mathis struck out at least one batter in five innings, including three in the second, and finished with a flourish by fanning the final two Hofstra hitters.
