CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Athletics is proud to announce that Charleston Head Men's Basketball Coach John Groce and his wife, Allison, have made a generous contribution of $100,000 to the Charleston Athletic Fund in support of the Cougars' revenue-sharing initiatives. This gift will directly strengthen Charleston's ability to retain, recruit and develop championship-caliber student-athletes now and into the future.
"We would like to thank John and Allison for leading by example and making such an impactful gift towards the Charleston men's basketball program," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Development/Executive Director of the Charleston Athletics Fund Dex Blank. "We hope that other Charleston men's basketball supporters and fans will join the Groce family by making a contribution of their own to help us continue supporting this team at a championship level."
The STARR Fund (Student-Athlete Recruitment and Retention Fund) is a Charleston Athletics initiative designed to help the department compete at the highest level. It allows opportunities for retention and recruitment of top talent while expanding student-athlete NIL opportunities.
"My wife, Allison, and I have quickly and clearly recognized that the College of Charleston and the city of Charleston are special! We believe our men's basketball program and our student-athletes play a pivotal role in serving The College and our community," said Groce. "In the new era of college athletics, it is important that Cougar Nation and our community continue to support our current student-athletes while also assisting us in recruiting the next group of great Cougar leaders."
"Gifts to the Men's Basketball STARR Fund are transformational and provide the necessary resources to put championship-caliber teams on the court that represent all of us - #1Charleston," continued Groce. "Most importantly, we are beyond grateful to all the generous and committed donors who have given previously to the STARR Fund. You are making a big difference! Lastly, we want to challenge all of Cougar Nation to participate and support the Men's Basketball STARR Fund. Our ability to compete depends on all of us. Go Cougs!"
Gifts to the Men's Basketball STARR Fund directly support the Charleston men's basketball revenue-sharing initiatives and are 100% tax deductible.
