Bernard F. Puckhaber, Class of '50 (Basketball)
Bernie Puckhaber is one of those lucky Charlestonians who has rarely had to leave the 10-block radius from which he grew up. Entering the College of Charleston in 1944, Puckhaber studied history and economics while dominating the guard position for the Maroons. He became the fourth-leading scorer in South Carolina and was selected as a First Team All-State player during the 1949-50 season. Equally skilled on the tennis court, Puckhaber was one of the College's top players facing competitive teams such as Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Clemson. He returned to the College in 1956 as basketball coach. His credentials on the courts are impressive, but it is his generosity and good spirit that Puckhaber's friends and family admire most.
