CofC Athletics Hall of Fame: Louis J. Roempke

1986
Louis J. Roempke, Class of '56 (Basketball)
As the star center for the College of Charleston men's basketball team in the early 1950s, Lou Roempke unpretentiously made all those who played around him look good. He played with a smooth effortlessness which translated into an exciting game whenever he suited up. Roempke entered the Navy's Officer Candidate School, returned to Charleston as a reporter for the News and Courier, and then eventually turned his sights on medicine. He attended the Medical University of South Carolina and opened a small practice in nearby Beaufort, S.C., where he lived out the rest of his life.
