F. Mitchell Johnson, Class of '37 (Basketball)
F. Mitchell "Cussie" Johnson came to College of Charleston in 1933 and starred on the basketball team. His 19 points against The Citadel during the 1934-35 season propelled the College to a 15-point victory and secured the City Intercollegiate Championship. During the next two seasons, Johnson led as team captain, racking up points and thrilling the stands. After graduation, he began an impressive career in investment and securities. Johnson's active alumni membership turned into becoming president of the Alumni Association, and in 1959, he became the first member of the College's Board of Trustees to be elected by the alumni, a position he retained for 28 years. As President of the Board of Trustees, he helped his friend and then College President Ted Stern enable and execute the College's transition into a state institution.
