Martin, Estevarena Named Harris Teeter Student-Athletes of the Week

Samantha Martin continued to be a rock for The College over the past week, as she made three starts through the five games that The College played, earning the win in two of those starts, and picked up the save for the third game. Over the course of 14.2 innings of work, Martin struck out 14 batters while only allow six hits and three walks total. She allowed two runs, good for a .95 ERA over the three games. Both of the runs came on a single home run against Towson on Sunday, April 24. Through starts against Charleston Southern and Towson, she managed to maintain perfect games into the fourth inning of each. Her record on the season now stands at 13-9, and she has a cumulative ERA of 2.58, the ninth-best mark in the CAA thus far this season. She is fifth in the conference in strikeouts, tied for fifth in wins, and has the sixth-lowest batting average allowed in the conference at .226.

Juan Estevarena proved to be invaluable for the College of Charleston as they participated in, and won, the CAA Championship tournament over the weekend. He played in the No. 1 singles spot in each of the Cougars three matches, defeating JMU’s Sebastian Salinas, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3 Tie breaker); Elon’s Felipe Sarrasague, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; and No. 67 ranked UNCW’s Santtu Leskinen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Estevarena’s win over Leskinen, who was named the 2016 CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, was the deciding point for The College’s CAA Championship match.
