Davidson trailed College of Charleston at the break, 34-29, but held the Cougars to only 17 points and 25.9 percent shooting (7-of-27) in the second stanza. "We wanted to be more aggressive on defense in the second half, knowing that our offense feeds off of our defensive performance," stated Davidson head coach Annette Watts.
The Wildcat offense did come to life in the second half, as the 'Cats quickly leveled the game at 36-all three minutes into the period thanks to a jumper by senior Ashley Hallsted. College of Charleston responded with nine consecutive points, highlighted by a Jennifer Manard three-pointer, to establish a 45-36 cushion.
From there, Davidson's defense really stepped up, holding the Cougars to just one point over the next seven-and-a-half minutes. During that same stretch, the 'Cats rattled off 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
A three-pointer by Patrice Bryant at 4:43 ended the drought for Charleston, but Davidson was comfortably ahead at that point, 57-49. The Cougars wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
In the first half, Bryant nailed three trifectas for the Cougars and led all scorers with 13 points. College of Charleston twice held leads as large as 11 in the first stanza before Davidson ended the period on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to five at intermission.
Hallsted paced Davidson with 14 points in the game while fellow senior Meghan Bryant added 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Bryant finished with a game-high 18 points for Charleston. Point guard Rachel King chipped in with five assists and eight rebounds.
Davidson will next hit the road to tackle Western Carolina on Tuesday, Jan. 27. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. College of Charleston returns home to host Georgia Southern on Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m.
