Patrice Bryant scored 18 points and had five steals to lead the Lady Cougars to their second of the victory season, improving their overall record to 2-9.
College of Charleston led from start to finish and extended its lead over 10 five different times and even led by as many as 18 points, but Winthrop (3-8) continued to hang around.
After extending its lead to 58-40 with 10:15 remaining in the game, Winthrop went on a 15-6 run to cut the lead to nine points with just over three minutes to go on a lay-up by Tameika Brooks. Shanna Mickens responded for the Lady Cougars with a three-pointer to make it a 12-point game again and secure the win.
"I'm disappointed in the team tonight," said head coach Cheryl Nix. "We didn't come ready to play and our post players didn't show up."
College of Charleston won the battle in the paint 30-20, led by Carrie Geden's 15 points and seven rebounds. Erica Nesmith finished with 12 points and Marketta Talley added eight points and a career-high eight assists.
Winthrop was led by Amanda Behnke's 14 points and five rebounds. Brooks added 12 points and five rebounds. Jolandra Crump had 10 points and five boards.
The Cougars take on Elon at Kresse Arena on Saturday at 2:00. Winthrop's next contest will be a road game to open Big South Conference play at High Point, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
