Smith canned six of her 12 attempts from the field en route to her career-high point total and King hit four of seven shots from the floor as the Cougars (5-5 overall, 2-3 Southern Conference) fired 38.3 percent (23 of 60) for the game.
Brianne Gray, Kitara McMoore and Shashonna Moore each pulled down a contest-best eight rebounds as the Phoenix (1-12, 0-7) won the battle of the boards 41-34, but could not overcome a 19-30 turnover disadvantage. Gray posted a team-high 10 points as Elon bounced back from 27.3-percent marksmanship (six of 22) from the field in the first half to shoot 38.8 percent (19 of 49) for the night.
Charleston used a 27-6 run to transform a 7-4 deficit into a 31-13 advantage on a post move by Emilee Terry with 1:59 remaining in the first period before settling for a 31-16 halftime lead. Early in the second stanza, the Phoenix reeled off seven consecutive points to pull within 36-27 on bucket inside by Sade Jordan with 14:38 to play.
The Cougars responded by scoring 14 of the game's next 20 points to build a 50-33 advantage on a basket in the paint by Eliza Kucharska with 7:20 left. Elon went on a 9-2 run to draw within 52-42 on a jumper by Moore with 3:52 remaining, but could inch no closer.
CofC fashioned advantages in points off turnovers (27-16) and bench points (18-15) to negate Elon edges in points in the paint (32-26) and second chance points (11-6).
The Phoenix will return to action Monday when Georgia Southern visits Alumni Gym at 6 p.m. while the Cougars visit UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. that same night.
