Charleston drops to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Conference, while Appalachian State improves to 3-4 and 1-0 in the league.
Appalachian State started the game on a 14-0 run, with a majority of the Mountaineers' 10 first half steals and the Cougars' 16 first half turnovers coming during the 19 minute stretch. The Cougars snapped the drought at 11:12 off two straight baskets by Christina Williams. Both teams would trade baskets the rest of the half and the Mountaineers went into intermission leading by 13 at 38-25. Charleston was 10-for-20 from the field in the first half, while the Mountaineers were 16-for-37. The Cougars went 0-for-8 from the three-point line.
The second half started the same way with the Mountaineers keeping a double-digit lead despite improved shooting by the Cougars, who shot 41.1 percent in the final stanza, compared to 33.3 percent in the first half. With 7:56 left to go and Charleston trailing by 21 points at 63-42, the Cougars went on a 20-9 run that cut the margin to 10 at 72-62 with 37 seconds left. That would not be enough to complete the comeback and Charleston fell 76-62.
Charleston shot 37.3 percent for the game, while ASU shot 45.0 percent. The Cougars were 77.3 percent from the free-throw line, with Hughes going nine-for-10. Appalachian State was 19-for-24. Aside from Hughes and Williams, Erica Irick was in double figures with 11 points. Hughes and Melissa Chambers paced in rebounds with six apiece. Eboni Kirby and Greteya Kelley led Appalachian State with 14 points each. Danielle Edwards led defensively with nine boards.
The Cougars travel to Coastal Carolina Dec. 20th for a 5:00 PM contest, while the Mountaineers host Elon Dec. 19th at 7:00 PM.
