The Cougars drop to 14-13 overall and 10-10 in the league, while Chattanooga wins its 13th straight to move to 24-3 and 19-1 in the SoCon.
The College of Charleston honored its five seniors, Rachel King, Jennifer Manard, Eliza Kucharska, Erica Nesmith and Patrice Bryant, in a pre-game ceremony this afternoon.
Charleston and Chattanooga fought back-to-back in the first half with four lead changes and five ties. No team could break away and at the break the Cougars led by one, 32-31. Chattanooga shot 50 percent from the field, while the Cougars were 40.6 percent from the field, but had five three-pointers, compared to just one for the Mocs.
Chattanooga opened the second half with a 14-4 run to explode to the 11-point lead with 14:25 left. Charleston was able to cut the deficit down to six but could not get any closer and fell to the eventual 13-point 69-56 loss.
Chattanooga shot 48.3 percent in the second half to finish the game with 49.1 percent from the field. Charleston finished 35.4 percent for the game after shooting 30.3 in the second half. The Cougars had 15 turnovers compared to 21 for the Mocs, but it was the Mocs with the 46-30 edge in rebounds, including 30 defensive boards.
Leading the Cougars was Marketta Talley with 14 points. Erica Irick followed with 11 points. Eliza Kucharska tied her career-high with eight points. Patrice Bryant led in rebounds with eight.
Chattanooga was paced by Tiffany Patton with her 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Mattison followed closely with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams will be in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the 2005 Kyocera Southern Conference basketball tournament Mar. 2nd-5th. Chattanooga enters as the #1 seed while the Cougars await the results of games this afternoon to find out where they stand.
