The loss was the third worst loss in CofC Division I history. Charleston lost by 54 points in an 81-27 game against Clemson Jan. 5, 1995. It was also the first time in two seasons the Cougars have had no player score in double-figures in a contest.
Charleston drops to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the Southern Conference while Chattanooga wins its 13th straight and goes to 14-3 overall and 8-0 in the league.
Chattanooga opened the first half with a 20-5 run over the first 7:30 minutes and never looked back, amassing a 53-24 lead heading into intermission. The Cougars also suffered through a seven minute scoring drought form 17:08 to 10:03 that saw the Mocs rattle off 14 straight points. Only two Cougars scored more than two points in the half, with Anne Hunter posting six points and Marketta Talley netting eight
The Mocs continued their dominance after intermission, extending their lead by as much as 53 in the second half, 87-34 with 4:01 left in the game before settling with the 48-point win.
Leading the Cougars was Talley with eight points and Hunter and May Young with six. Ashley Jenkins pulled down a career-high eight rebounds to pace the team. Four Mocs scored in double-figures with Katasha Brown leading with 15 and three others with 14 each. Nicole Mattison and Alex Henderson led with nine boards apiece.
For the game the Cougars shots 31.5 percent, while the Mocs shot 43.2. Charleston was out-rebounded 50-38 and had three more turnovers 24-21. The Cougars were just three-for 11 from the free throw line and four-for 11 from beyond the three-point arc.
The Cougars return to the John Kresse Arena to host Western Carolina Monday the 23rd in a 7:00 PM game, while the Mocs travel to Georgia Southern the same date and time.
