The Cougars improve to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Conference, while the Paladins fall to 7-8 and 3-2 in the league as well.
The College of Charleston opened the game with a 9-3 run over the first four-and-half minutes before Furman scored five straight to cut the margin to one with 13:42 left. Charleston responded and went up by six again before Furman came back to tie the game, 18-18 with 9:59 left in the half, mostly from a six-point effort during that stretch by Lauren Few. Charleston was unable to break away from Furman, with the winning margin staying within five. The half ended with Charleston leading by three, 32-29.
The Cougars opened the second half with seven turnovers in the first five minutes, and Furman capitalized taking the 36-34 lead with 15:00 minutes left. The Cougars retook the lead off a jumper by Tiffany Green and a free throw by Melissa Chambers before Furman' Megan Scott gave the Paladins their last lead of the game with 12:15 to go. Charleston responded with an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to give the Cougars the 47-40 lead with 8:02 lead. Furman's Baker nailed a three pointer to cut the Cougar lead to four but could never get closer than one as both teams missed key shots down the stretch leading up to the missed game-winner by Jessica Lange.
Charleston shot 36.1 percent from the field, while the Paladins shot 24.2, being held to 20.5 percent in the second half. Charleston held the 49-45 edge in rebounds and steals 12-11. Jade Hughes, although being held scoreless in the second half, led the Cougars with 16 points, including a career-high four three-pointers. Irick followed with 11 points. Her eight rebounds paced the team as well. Tommi Paris led the Paladins with 12 points, while Melynda Grant had 10 rebounds.
Charleston travels to Elon Jan. 14th for a 2:00 PM contest, while Furman travels to Furman the same day for a 1:00 PM game.
