Deanna Patrick had a team-high 22 kills to pace College of Charleston Wednesday night in the Cougars' 3-1 (30-23, 22-30, 30-20, 30-27) win over South Carolina in front of 277 at the Volleyball Competition Facility in Columbia, S.C.
Game 1 was tied on 15 different occasions, with the final knot, 22-22. Charleston used an 8-1 run to put away the Gamecocks, 30-23, despite being out hit .342 to .298.
South Carolina evened the match with a 30-22 win in Game 2. The Cougars wrapped up Game 3, 30-20, while holding the Gamecocks to just .029 hitting. Charleston netted 15 kills in the game to take the 2-1 edge in the match.
Charleston (27-7) hit a match-high .422 and notched 21 kills in the 30-27 Game 4 win, even with South Carolina's Shonda Cole's 10 of 29 kills coming in the final set.
For the match, Charleston hit .308, while South Carolina hit .280.
Tiffany Blum followed Patrick with 16 kills, and Annie Uthe had 11. The Charleston defense was anchored by Marie Dobrenz with 22 digs, followed by Alexis Lowes with 11. Lindsey Kane had 58 assists.
Marija Milosevic had 12 kills for the Gamecocks. Sarah Cline came up with 13 digs to lead the South Carolina defense, followed by Cole's 11. Alexcis Thompson dished out 40 assists.
The Gamecocks end their season at 15-17, and College of Charleston awaits its next opponent. The NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship selection show will be broadcasted on ESPNews at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The selection show party for the Cougars will be held in the lobby of the Willard A. Silcox Building (Old Gym).
