Charleston snaps its three-game losing skid and improves to 11-13, while Savannah State falls to 3-23 on the year.
The Cougars opened the game with a 7-0 run that was ended at the 16:50 mark with the jumper by Tiger Antoinette Williams. Savannah State cut the lead to six with 6:11 in the half before Charleston went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take the 37-22 lead with 2:08 to go. The Tigers did close out the half with an 8-3 run that cut the Cougar lead from 15 to 10 at intermission, 40-30. Shooting was fairly even with Charleston holding the slight 46.7 to 44.4 in field goal percentage.
Charleston and Savannah State traded baskets to open the second half, with the Cougars managing to maintain a double-digit lead until 10:36 to go when Tiger Shamice James connected on her second free throw attempt to cut the margin to nine. The Cougars responded in dominating fashion, going 22-9 over the rest of the half to take the 22-point 75-53 win.
Jade Hughes led the Cougars with 12 points, while Erica Irick and Erika Smith both posted 10 points each. Smith led the rebounding with eight, just two shy of netting her first career double-double. Every active player on the Cougar roster saw action tonight and scored at least two points. Shaunte Carter and Lashara Smith led the Tigers with 13 points each. James pulled down 10 boards to pace the team defensively.
The Cougars shot 47.0 percent on the night, compared to 38.6 for the Tigers. Rebounds were tied at 39 apiece, with Savannah State edging CofC, 22-19, in turnovers.
The Cougars play in the Kresse Arena for the final time this season as they host Chattanooga the 18th in a 2:00 PM match. The 2006 seniors will be honored in a brief pre-game ceremony. Savannah State travels to Norfolk State the 22nd for a 7:00 PM contest.
