Cougars Win Women's Golf Tournament
9/25/2006 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
The College of Charleston women's golf team shot under 300 for a school record third straight round to win the Unlimited Potential/Myrtle Beach Classic held this week at Shaftesbury Glen Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"This is a great win for us," said CofC Head Women's Golf Coach Jamie Futrell. "This is a young team and to see them perform the way they did, especially in the final holes when the tournament was up for grabs, was exciting. It says a lot about what kind of team we have this season."
The Cougars edged Southern Illinois by two strokes to take their first regular-season championship since the 2003-04 season when they won the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Invitational.
The 890 54-hole total (294-299-297) is a school record for the Cougars. The previous record of 899 was set in the 2006 NCAA East Regional. It was also the first time Charleston won this tournament in its nine-year history. Southern Illinois shot an 892 while Middle Tennessee State, which was tied with the Cougars after the second round, shot a 302 in the final round to finish third with an 895. Coastal Carolina placed fourth with an 899. Leading the charge for the Chanticleers was freshman Araceli Felgueroso, who shot a 212 (71-70-71) to win individual medalist honors.
Southern Illinois' Kelly Gerlach and Christine Zoerlein, Charleston's Emily Rapp, Central Arkansas' Nicole Forshner, Middle Tennessee State's Taryn Durham and Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins were named to the All-Tournament team.
Leading the charge for Charleston was Rapp, who shot a 217 to finish tied for third. Steffi Kirchmayr and Dinah Plyler totaled a 224 each to tie for 11th, while Megan Miller tied for 23rd with her 228. Fiona Puyo tied for 36th with a 233 to round out the Cougar starting five.
Several Cougars competed as individuals in the tournament. Courtney Brink tied for 40th with a 236 and Carolin Christansson tied for 45th with a 237. Kelly White shot a 249 for a tie at 70th and in 73rd was Amber Kuss with her 250. Danielle Lugo shot a 260 and finished 81st for Charleston.
The College of Charleston competes Oct. 6th at the Lady Tarheel Invitational at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
