
CofC Women?s Basketball Seniors Lead Cougars to 70-49 Win

Senior Erika Smith scored a career-high 26 points, while Senior Jill Furstenburg posted 17 points, just three from her career-best, to lead the College of Charleston women's basketball team to the 70-49 win in front of 201 fans at the John Kresse Arena.
Charleston improves to 2-5 on the season, while Kennesaw State falls to 3-6.
The game began as a low scoring affair with both teams unable to mount a substantial lead the first eight minutes of the first half. Charleston found itself down 8-6 with 13:45 to go in the first half, but proceeded to go on a 12-1 run to lead 18-9 with 9:10 to go before intermission. The Cougars never looked back and went into the locker room leading 25-17.
Charleston exploded in the second-half and shot a season-high 72.0 percent from the field and led by as much as 24 points, 49-25, with 9:22 to go in the game. Kennesaw State staged a small 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 15, 49-34, with 7:27 to go, but that would be as close as the Owls would get. The Cougars maintained an average lead of 18 the rest of the game and settled for the 21-point, 70-49 win.
The Owls shot 33.3 percent from the field for the game, while the Cougars ended with a season-high 54.0 percent. The Cougars were five-for-eight from the three-point arc, while KSU was five-for-16. Kennesaw State was eight-for-18 from the free throw line and the Cougars were 11-for-17. Charleston edged the Owls in rebounds, 34-33 and had two less turnovers, 29-27.
Following Smith and Furstenburg in scoring was Kotcella, who went a perfect three-for-three from the three-point arc to post 11 on the night. Nikki Williams tied her career-high in rebounds with 11 to lead the Cougars. Jennifer Baker paced the Owls with 11 points on the night, while DeAndrea Bullock followed with 10. Bullock also led in rebounds with seven.
Charleston opens SoCon play Friday, Dec. 14th at 7:00 p.m., as the Cougars host Appalachian State at the John Kresse Arena. Kennesaw State travels just up the road to Charleston Southern for a 7:00 p.m. game the 14th as well.
