
Lawrence Leads CofC Past Citadel, 50-40, on Senior Night

David Lawrence scored a game-high 21 points and Philip McCandies added 11 rebounds as the College of Charleston downed The Citadel, 50-40, in Southern Conference college basketball action before 3,811 on Senior Night at John Kresse Arena on Thursday. It was the third largest crowd in Kresse Arena history.
Charleston, which has won 17 of its last 20 games, improved to 20-9 overall and 13-4 league play. Charleston reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2003-04, and for the 21st time in the last 27 seasons overall. The Bulldogs fell to 7-21 and 4-13.
Lawrence, who had 10 points at the break, was the only player in the game to score more than four points in the first half as the Cougars led 22-10 at intermission. Charleston used a 14-0 run and held the Bulldogs scoreless for 9:32 and had 20-6 lead with under three minutes remaining.
The Cougars used a 19-7 run to start the second half to take its largest lead at 41-17 with 9:45 left in the game. The Citadel, which forced Charleston into 13 second half turnovers, used a 21-4 run to cut Charleston's lead to 45-38 with 1:35 left on a layup by Demetrius Nelson. The Cougars hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure its 10th consecutive win over the Bulldogs.
Lawrence, who came within one point of his career high, finish 7-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Lawrence missed just one of four free throw attempts while dishing out a game-high five assists with no turnovers in 40 minutes of action.
Nelson, who was the only other player in the game to score double figures, finished with a team-high 19 points to lead the Bulldogs. J'Mel Everhart led The Citadel with nine rebounds.
The Cougars and the Bulldogs close out regular season play with league games on Saturday. Charleston travels to Georgia Southern for a 1:00 tipoff, while the Bulldogs host Davidson in a 1:05 start.
