The Cougars (11-4-1, 7-1 SoCon) are ranked ninth on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Southeast Region Poll for the week of Oct. 20. The No. 9 spot is a program-best for Charleston who is in its 18th year as a Division I team. Additionally, CofC moved up two spots on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's Tournament 64 Ranking to 52nd place.
The jump in the polls came as a result of wins over Western Carolina (1-0) and Appalachian State (2-1) last week. Junior defender Annie Pease scored the game-winner with 17 seconds left in regulation off a pass from sophomore midfielder Hannah Gmerek. Senior midfielder Julie Romanik made the first strike for the Cougars, scoring off a rebounded penalty kick with 44 seconds remaining in the first half.
UNC Greensboro (10-6-0, 6-2 SoCon) are one game behind in conference standings as the fight to host the Southern Conference Championships continue. Both squads have Elon and The Citadel remaining on their schedules.
The Spartans bested Chattanooga 1-0 on Oct. 18 as Kristin Player scored the game's only goal in the 43rd minute of action. Player leads UNCG with seven goals and six assists this season. She is currently ranked second in game-winning goals (10) on the Southern Conference's active career list.
The game should have a large turnout as Friday evening is Lowcountry Soccer Night at Patriots Point. Head coach Kevin Dempsey hopes to break the school record for attendance at a women's soccer game, which currently sits at 1,146 from a game in 2002 against Clemson. Military personnel and CofC staff/faculty and their families get in free the presentation of their ID card and local recreation and school soccer clubs have been invited.
