Jeremy Simmons (Lithonia, Ga.) scored 17 points and grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds, while teammates Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Tony White, Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.) added 18 points each as the College of Charleston knocked off cross-town rival Charleston Southern, 87-74, before 3,067 at Carolina First Arena on Wednesday.
With the win, Charleston's fourth in a row, the Cougars improved to 5-3. Charleston Southern fell to 4-5. Both teams play road games at ACC foe on Saturday. The Cougars travel to Clemson for a 7:30 start, while the Bucs are at Virginia Tech at 7:00.
"We played outstanding basketball over the final five minutes of the first half," said Cougar coach Bobby Cremins. "I would love to bottle some of those final minutes. We had dunks, hit jumpers and moved the ball very well. We played good team basketball."
Charleston used a 23-5 run over the final 5:21 of the first half to take commanding 54-34 lead at intermission. Monroe scored 16 points and had four steals in the first half.
Andrew Lawrence's (London, England) 3-pointer with 12:27 left in the game capped an 18-12 run that gave Charleston its biggest lead at 72-46. Lawrence, a freshman, finished with a season-high 13 points hitting 5-of-6 from the field.
Simmons record his third double-double in the last four games, while Monroe had a game-high six assists and a career-high tying five steals. Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) added 11 points and four rebounds.
Charleston Southern got a game-high 19 points from Jamarco Warren and 15 points from Kelvin Martin. Billy Blackmon added a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench. Jeremy Sexton scored 13 points.
For the game, Charleston shot 50.8 percent from the floor connecting on 31-of-61 attempts. The Cougars hit 10-of-24 3-point attempts. Charleston Southern shot 46.4 percent for the game (26-56).
