College of Charleston track and field's Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C.) placed eighth in the high jump at the NCAA East Regional held May 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C.
Smith, who is just the second CofC athlete to qualify for the Track and Field NCAAs and the first freshman, finished with a mark of 1.74 meters (5' 8.5"), and was only .04 meters from advancing to the national championships to be held June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
“Emily did a great job,” said track and field head coach Amy Seago. “To finish in eighth as a freshman is phenomenal! She was only three spots out of advancing to the NCAA National Meet.”
Smith capped a tremendous season for the Cougars and was the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, as well as a member of the All-Freshman team for the outdoor season. She qualified for the regional after clearing 1.75 meters to win the High jump in the SoCon tournament.
“Emily gained valuable big-meet experience that will help to get her to the next level next year. We couldn't be more proud of her accomplishments and the way in which she represented the College.”
