
CofC knocks off Samford, 78-67

Birmingham, Ala. -- Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) scored 23 points, while Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) added a career-high 21 points and nine rebounds helping the College of Charleston to a 78-67 Southern Conference win over Samford before 1,737 at Pete Hanna Center on Thursday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 10-6 overall and 5-0 in league play. Samford fell to 7-9 and 1-3. The Cougars play at Chattanooga at 2:30 on Saturday. The game will be televised by SportSouth.
Monroe and Casaan Breeden (Clio, S.C.) tallied 13 points each helping the Cougars to a 36-30 lead at intermission.
After Samford opened the second half with a 6-0 run that tied the game at 36-all, Andrew Lawrence (London, England) and Goudelock hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark an 11-2 run that gave Charleston a 47-38 lead with 13:34 left.
Samford answered with 16-8 run that cut Charleston's margin to 55-54 with 8:28 left. Goudelock followed with a layup and a pair of 3-pointers and Monroe added a 3-pointer that gave the Cougars a 66-56 lead with 5:58 remaining.
The Cougars, who finished with four turnovers, didn't commit a turnover over the final 18:09 of the game. Charleston held a slim 34-33 edge in rebounding, including 8-7 on the offensive glass.
Charleston's starting guard trio of Tony White, Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.), Goudelock and Monroe combined for 47 points and 20 rebounds. Goudelock finished with a game-high six assists.
For the game, Charleston shot 43.6 percent from the field, including 46.2 percent from behind the arc. The Cougars enjoyed season-highs for free throws made (18) and attempted (23). Samford shot 41.8 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from 3-point land.
