MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - In its final match of the regular season, the College of Charleston women's soccer team takes on The Citadel in Southern Conference action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Patriots Point.
The match has heavy implications on the SoCon standings as the Cougars battle for fourth place and home-field advantage in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament. The Cougars clinch the fourth spot with a win and an Elon loss to No. 16 UNC Greensboro (match played on Wednesday, Oct. 27; 7 p.m.; at Elon).
The Cougars (8-9-1, 5-4-1 SoCon) are unbeaten in their last three matches and most recently downed Wofford on their Senior Day. CofC got an early goal from Hope Atkinson (Rumson, N.J.) and kept its opponent off the board for the third consecutive match to take the win. The Cougars boasted a 15-3 shot advantage in the match and put six attempts on goal.
The Citadel (11-6-1, 7-3-0 SoCon) is having its best season in program history. The Cadets had their four-match winning streak snapped when they lost, 0-3, to Furman on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars have dominated The Citadel in previous years, posting a 9-0-0 record and outscoring the Cadets 47-3. Last season's matchup was the closest the teams have ever played with CofC claiming a 1-0 victory on the road. Senior midfielder Morgan set up the goal-scoring play and picked up the assist.
