CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Whitney Russell recorded 14 kills and senior Ginny Phillips and junior Sarah Havel joined the 300-block club as the College of Charleston toppled The Citadel 3-0 Tuesday night at Carolina First Arena (25-15, 25-15, 25-23).
The Cougars (23-5, 11-1) beat The Citadel (6-21, 1-11) for the 24th straight time and have won 3-0 in 23 of those 24 matches.
Havel and Phillips join an elite group of CofC athletes that have recorded 300 total blocks. The club now numbers nine athletes including Havel, Phillips and current junior Elyse Chubb who has 361 rejections. On the all-time list Chubb is fourth, Phillips eighth (304) and Havel ninth (300).
After two sets in which the Cougars seemed in total control, the Bulldogs fought back in the third. The Citadel scored four of the first five points and owned a five point advantage at 6-11.
Facing the possibility of having to go to a fourth set the Cougars clamped down and used an 8-0 run to gain momentum and race to a 14-11 lead. Although it took five match points for the Cougars to end the contest, sophomore Kelly Kolich did just that with a powerful swing.
CofC out-hit their opponent for the 22nd time in 28 matches with a .352 effort compared to a Citadel hitting percentage of .173.
The Cougars go on the road this weekend as they face conference foes Davidson (Friday, 7p.m.) and Georgia Southern (Saturday, 7p.m.).
