
Cougars Take on #10 North Carolina Tar Heels

The College of Charleston women's basketball team begins a six-game road stretch with a contest against 10th-Ranked North Carolina at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. Tuesday, Dec. 28. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
North Carolina (11-0) and the College of Charleston (4-6) have met 12 times, with the Tar Heels having won the last 10 in a row, the last a 57-88 decision in Chapel Hill Nov. 13, 2009. The only win for the Cougars came during the 1976-77 season with Charleston coming away with the 70-48 decision. North Carolina is 11-1 all-time.
The Cougars are led this season by Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) with 12.1 points per game and Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) with 9.0. Deidre Ramer (Franklin, Tenn.) leads with 5.6 rebounds per game.
North Carolina is ranked 10th in the latest AP poll and is led by Italee Lucas with 18.9 points and Jessica Breland with 13.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Charleston is playing a nationally-ranked opponent for the seventh time since beginning NCAA play in 1991. The Cougars are 0-6. Charleston last faced a ranked opponent when the Cougars faced the Tar Heels last season; they were ranked #5 at the time.
This game marks the second time this season the Cougars have faced an ACC opponent. The Cougars lost to N.C. State, 36-73, earlier this season. Charleston is 1-15 in NCAA history against the ACC. The lone win came last season against Clemson with the Cougars taking the 68-55 decision at the Carolina First Arena.
Starting at North Carolina, the Cougars are on the road for six straight games, the next home game is Jan. 15 against UNC Greensboro. Charleston next travels up the road to Charleston Southern for a New Year's Eve contest. The Dec. 31st game tips off at 2 p.m.
