
Cougars Close out 2010 with Cross-town Tilt

The College of Charleston women's basketball team travels up the road to Charleston Southern Dec. 31 to close out 2010. The Cougars and Bucs face off at 2 p.m. Friday at the CSU Fieldhouse.
Charleston Southern (5-7) and the College of Charleston (4-7) have met 55 times, with the Cougars holding the 47-8 advantage. CofC has won the last three meetings, including a 64-59 decision Dec. 29, 2009.
The Cougars are led by Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) with 11.4 points per game, followed by Janae Smith (Matteson, Ill.) with 8.5 a game. Deidre Ramer (Franklin, Tenn.) paces the team in rebounds with 5.5, closely followed by Latisha Harris (Aynor, S.C.) with 5.2.
Charleston Southern is 5-7 after defeating Mercer, 71-68, in its last game. The Bucs are led by Katie Tull with 15.8 points a game. She is followed by Kelsey Wasmer with 13.8 and Lakeitha Alston with 12.3. Wasmer also paces the team in rebounds with 6.6.
The Cougars played #10 North Carolina close in the second half (32-35) but could not overcome a 23-point halftime deficit after shooting 18.9 percent in the first half, and fell 75-49 in the last game, Dec. 28. Brianna Davie (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Harris led the Cougars with 11 points each. Harris pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds in the effort.
This game marks the third time this season the Cougars have faced a Big South opponent. The Cougars defeated Liberty, 49-46, and lost to Coastal Carolina, 43-44, earlier this season. CofC is 128-27 all-time against current Big South members.
Starting at North Carolina, the Cougars are on the road for six straight games, the next home game is Jan. 15 against UNC Greensboro. The third of six road games is against Davidson Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
