Head Coach Nancy Wilson
About facing Appalachian State
“We respect them a lot but the main thing is that we need to go in there with the realization that this is a new game. I think we are playing very well right now. When we played them here, I thought both teams played a good game and they won it on a big shot at the end. It could have gone either way”.
“When we went up there, it was during a stretch that I did not think we were playing our very best. We are playing much better and with more confidence and we continue to shoot the ball well across the board”.
Speaking on the 22-7 first half run
“They looked energetic in their first couple of plays but when we answered right back, I think that opened the door for us. Different people were hitting for us during that stretch. Brooke [Kotcella], Ericka [Williams] and Deidra Jones were all playing well. We had an inside and outside game working for us and we were getting a good variety of looks. We played with the same energy and emotion that we did when we were playing really well this season”.
On the Cougars offensive rebounding
“That's great that we had 36 rebounds and 16 were offensive. That's energy and effort. People were really going after it. We committed to boxing out and going to the boards hard. When we do that, we have people that can get it done.
About the performances of CofC's six seniors
“We did not have a single senior that did not play well for us today. Jade [Hughes] limited their leading scorer early, despite a height advantage for them and Deidra Jones was strong in the low post and established early that she was going to be a force. NeShonda McLaurin had several key plays and Brooke [Kotcella] and Ericka Williams are a nice pair of forwards. Each had a great game”.
Speaking about the College of Charleston's postseason opportunity
“I just really appreciate our administration allowing us to be in this tournament and have a chance to compete. When you have six seniors, four of whom have been in the program for four years, this is really a gift to them. They have helped put the program in a position to be invited to a tournament like the WBI”.
Ericka Williams
On what it means to be playing after the SoCon Tournament
“This is history. It's our first time playing in postseason and it's a lot of fun. You lose in the Southern Conference Tournament, you think your career is over and then we get invited to the WBI. You get to just keep playing the game that you love to play.”
Brooke Kotcella
On what it means to be playing after the SoCon Tournament
“It's something that the school has not had happen before so that's pretty big. Being a senior, when you've had basketball as a part of your life for so long, you just want it to keep going as long as you can. It's great that we have that opportunity”.
Looking ahead to No. 1E Appalachian State
“I never would have thought that we would have ended up playing them until I saw the bracket. We lost to them twice so that just motivates us even more coming into the game. We both know how each other plays so its just going to come down to heart and who wants it more”.
