CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite getting off to a slow start and dropping the first set, the College of Charleston volleyball team rebounded to beat The Citadel 3-1 in their first Southern Conference match Tuesday night at McAlister Field House (20-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-21).
Senior Ginny Phillips and junior Elyse Chubb led the way with 17 kills apiece and senior Cole Dawley recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 15 digs to help CofC (11-4, 1-0) move to 23-0 all-time vs. The Citadel (5-10, 0-1).
After winning the second set to even the match at 1-1 the third set was not easy for the Cougars. In a game that featured 12 ties a Citadel service error and three consecutive kills from sophomore Kelly Kolich gave CofC a little breathing room at 11-15. The Citadel used an 8-4 run to tie the game at 19, but eventually a kill by freshman Madelyn McGinnis sealed the win at 28-26.
In the fourth and final set the Cougars held The Citadel to a .188 hitting efficiency and forced them into five errors. Although CofC had seven errors of their own, Phillips and Chubb combined for eight kills to lift the Cougars to victory in the set and close out the match.
Junior Sarah Havel was a force on defense with a total of seven blocks.
The Cougars will continue conference play with another road contest, Friday at 7p.m. against Western Carolina. Stay tuned to cofcsports.com for live stats and all things CofC volleyball.
