Equestrian Offers a Pair of Strong Outings at Weekend Shows

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston equestrian team impressed judges in its weekend Intercollegiate Horse Show Association shows with a first-place and runner-up finish over the weekend.
The Cougars claimed second place at the Savannah College of Art and Design Halloween Horse Show at the Roland C. Waranch Equestrian Center in Hardeeville, S.C., and then offered their best performance of the season to take home highest honors at the Georgia Southern Fall Show at Evermore Farm in Brooklet, Ga.
At the SCAD show, the Cougars had four best-in-class riders but were edged out of first place by host institute SCAD.
Individual winners were Eliza Hay with her second-straight class-best showing in the Open Flat (section A), Deryn Hannapel in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter (section A), Sara von Schweinitz in the Beginner Walk Trot Canter and Alyssa Johnson in the Walk Trot (section A).
The Cougars turned around to win eight of the 16 events they were represented in to take home first place the following day at Georgia Southern's 15-team show.
CofC got class-best performances out of Emily McKee in Open Fences (section A). Zoe Merritt in Intermediate Fences (section B), Rachel Williams in Novice Fences (section A), Danielle Huntsman in Intermediate Flat (section A), Amanda Mazzola in Advanced Walk Trot Canter (section A), Caitlin Ignatowicz in Advanced Walk Trot Canter (section B), Deryn Hannapel in Advanced Walk Trot Canter (section C) and Alyssa Johnson in Walk Trot.
The Cougars remain in third place in the IHSA Zone 5 Region 3 standings but pulled within five points of second-place Georgia Southern. SCAD sits atop the region rankings.
The Cougars have two weeks off before hosting their first show of the season at Storybook Farms on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m.
