CLEMSON, S.C. - After finishing in second-place by just one second in the 3,000-meter run, freshman Dena O'Brien left nothing to chance as she won the 5,000-meter run in dominating fashion to propel the College of Charleston women's track and field team to a sixth-place finish at the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.
O'Brien time of 16:46.59 bettered the previous Southern Conference record of 16:52.46 set in 1988 by Whitney Ball. O'Brien also set a new CofC schol record, bettering her own previous record of 17:13.11. After lapping the entire field in the race, O'Brien finished 1:02.55 ahead of the next closest competitor.
In the field events the Cougars got a pair of top-five finishes as freshman Claire Goodson posted a fourth-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters. Junior Emily Smith finished fourth as well in the high jump with a jump of 1.65 meters. For Goodson's performance in the pole vault she earned All-Freshman Team honors as the second best freshman in the event.
Next up on the Cougars schedule is the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on March 5 in Blacksburg, Va.
