CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sophomore Megan Fischer (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) scored 12 points and added four rebounds as the Cougars came up short against the Appalachian State Mountaineers 39-71 Saturday afternoon at Carolina First Arena.
Three other CofC athletes scored at least six points and guard Jillian Brown (Midlothian, Va.) dished out five of the Cougars 13 team assists.
For most of the game the Cougars controlled the boards, as they collected 17 offensive rebounds and 37 total rebounds for the game. CofC currently ranks second in the Southern Conference in offensive rebounds.
The Cougars (6-17, 3-11) played shut-down defense from the opening tip, holding the Mountaineers without a basket for 5 minutes and 42 seconds and built an early 5-0 lead with 14:18 remaining in the first half.
The Mountaineers would find their rhythm on offense though and went on a 23-3 run over the next 10 minutes.
The Cougars did not go down without a fight as they mounted a 12-0 run of their own in the second half. Fischer and sophomore Cathryn Hardy (Dayton, Ohio) each scored six points in the spurt.
CofC continued to have good production from their bench with 15 points from the reserves, but it wasn't enough as the Mountaineers extended their lead down the stretch.
The Cougars are back at home Monday for a 7p.m. tip against SoCon foe Davidson.
