CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston junior Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) will take to the links competing as one of six individuals to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Golf East Regional Championship to be held on May 5-7 at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Whittaker is the second Cougar women's golfer in the last four years to compete individually in the NCAA East Regional next to former Southern Conference Player of the Year Stephanie Kirchmayr in 2008. She will tee off tomorrow at 8:55 a.m. (ET) and is paired with Kelly Shon of Princeton and Maria Ronderos of Miami (Fla.).
"This is a great opportunity for Leigh," said CofC head coach Jamie Futrell after Wednesday's practice round. "She's had a great year and it is an honor to be chosen to compete in this event. I feel like her game is in good shape heading into this weekend's tournament."
The two-time All-SoCon Team standout goes into postseason tournament play with a 74.93 single-season stroke average which currently ranks fourth all-time in program history. Whittaker finished in the top 10 on five occasions this season including three top five finishes during the spring.
"I'm very excited to compete in a tournament with teams and individuals of such high-skill levels," Whittaker said. "I can't wait to see the golf course and feel confident about how I'm playing right now."
