Women's soccer player Emilie Huser is enjoying her senior year to the fullest, and plans to spend each game playing her hardest. Especially now, with the Cougars vying for the Southern Conference Championship, the importance of her remaining collegiate games is heightened.
Huser transferred to the College of Charleston after her freshman year which she spent at the University of Miami. She hasn't looked back since. She says the best part of senior year has been the way in which she and the other seniors are able to guide the team.
“Just being in the leadership role now and having the freshmen look up to you, it's all or nothing this year. It's exciting, it's thrilling, it's bittersweet, and every game is on the line,” said Huser.
The College of Charleston's women's soccer team has big hopes for the 2012 tournament after a disappointing loss in the SoCon finals last season.
“We lost last year in the conference final against Samford and I think it left a really bitter taste in everyone's mouth. This year we expect nothing less than what we did last year, and hopefully we will be able to seal the deal and get a conference title,” Huser said.
Huser thinks the team is moving in the right direction and says the girls are getting better and better each year. She credits a large part of the development to head coach Christian Michner.
“Being here the past three years seeing Mich take over the team - we've already seen huge strides in the program in a small amount of time.”
The student-athletes have been practicing harder than ever to prepare for tough games this season, and Huser feels the time they spent on individual skills in the spring practices has helped everyone perfect their game.
Over the spring offseason, the soccer team held regular practices and workouts to hone their individual abilities. They also spent time in the weight room working on conditioning and strength to ensure the team is in peak physical form, already looking forward to this week's SoCon Tournament.
As the women's soccer team heads toward the final stretch of the season, Huser is hoping for a strong finish for both herself and the team.
“I just want to live every moment to the fullest and not take things for granted,” said Huser. “I want to live every game like it's my last and play as hard as I possibly can.”
Huser is finishing a strong college career on the field and says she is thankful for all she has achieved through being a student-athlete.
“When it's over I'm taking away everything I've learned from being a student-athlete in general,” she said. “I've learned how to manage my time and discipline myself; how to be a leader and a role model; it's set me up for the future.”
