Runner-Up Finish For Cougars at Szambecki Team Race

NORFOLK, Va. – The College of Charleston coed sailing team turned in a runner-up finish at the two-day Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion over the weekend at the Towne Point Yacht Club.
The Cougars and Boston College both compiled a 6-1 record in the first round, but both teams went 4-3 and 2-5 respectively in the second round which gave Stanford wiggle room to capture first-place honors with an 11-3 overall record. The Cardinal went 6-1 in the final round of competition.
CofC entered the regatta as the defending champions and posted a 10-4 overall record on the final day. They defeated host ODU, Georgetown, Dartmouth, the U.S. Naval Academy, Boston College and St. Mary's College of Maryland in the first round on Saturday, but managed only four wins on Sunday against ODU, Navy, BC and St. Mary's in the deciding second round.
The Cougars were led by the rotations of senior All-American skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and sophomore crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.); senior All-American skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior crew Cory Decollibus (Duxbury, Mass.); and senior skipper and 2012 London Olympian Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and freshman crew Seppie McAdams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.).
In all, 57 races were sailed. St. Mary's (9-6) and Boston College (8-7) had a sail-off race for fourth and fifth place.
The Cougar sailors will next compete at the SAISA Spring Coed Championships hosted by Eckerd College and USF on April 6-7 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
