CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston coed sailing team punched its ticket to nationals in its quest to defend its 2012 national title with a win at the SAISA Team Race Championships held over the weekend at the same site of the ICSA Team Race National Championship to be held on May 25-27 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
CofC went 4-0 against second-place South Florida and 3-1 versus third-place Eckerd College for a combined 7-1 winning record in 12 races sailed over the course of four rounds. The Cougars maneuvered through light westerly breeze at the in-conference regatta for a berth to nationals.
“I am proud of the team for coming down to Florida and getting qualified for the APS Team Race Nationals,” CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. “We still have a lot of work to do in preparation for nationals, but for now, we will focus on preparing for our final exams, women's district championships and the coed semifinals.”
They were led to victory by senior skippers Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.), Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) along with crews in sophomore Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.), freshman Seppie McAdams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and senior Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.).
In other weekend competition, the No. 9-ranked CofC women placed third behind Yale and Tufts at the two-day Emily Wick Women's Trophy Intersectional regatta hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.
Junior Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) skippered A-Division to a third-place finish with senior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), while sophomore Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) skippered B-Division to a fifth-place finish with freshman crew Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) in races 1-10, 12-18 and freshman crew Emily Stuart (Riverside, R.I.) in race 11.
The Cougars will gear up this weekend for three more regattas – the Thompson Trophy hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on April 20-21 in New London, Conn., the Admirals Cup hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on April 20-21 in Kings Point, N.Y., and the SAISA Women's Championships hosted by Eckerd College on April 20-21 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
