CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior midfielder Jade Reynolds (Oxon, England) scored in the 89th minute, but it wasn't enough as DePaul used late scoring to get past the College of Charleston women's soccer team, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field.
Reynolds knocked in a clean header off a free kick from nine yards out by sophomore forward Michaela Herrmann (Centennial, Colo.) to put the Cougars (1-3) on the board in the final minutes of regulation. It marked the second goal of her career.
“Jade plays with a lot of heart,” CofC Head Coach Christian Michner said. “She is all about helping her team get results. She went into battle, found Michaela's ball off the free kick and headed toward the goal.”
DePaul led early, 1-0, after an unassisted goal by Elise Wyatt, who converted a turnover from 10 yards out in the 39th minute. Neither team could find another score until the under 10-minute mark of the second half.
In the 80th minute, Ana Greik found the back of the lower left of the net from five yards out off the pass from teammate MaryKate Cicinelli to make it 2-0 for the Blue Demons. Three minutes later, Cicinelli made a play of her own with a shot from 11 yards out with the assist from Ashleigh Goodard.
“We went up against a really determined DePaul side,” Michner said. “They were first on most balls. I really think the travel took its toll on us with the lack of healthy players. We only had two subs, so it was a tough one for us today.”
The Blue Demons (3-1) had 11 shots on goal putting senior Eli Sarasola (San Sebastian, Spain) to work between the posts as she made eight saves in goal for the Cougars.
“It was a good weekend of play,” Michner said. “We faced two good teams who are hot right now in regards to scoring goals and wins. We always want to play the toughest competition we can against a team like Illinois out of the Big Ten Conference and DePaul out of the BIG EAST. It was a real test for us. We will regroup and focus on our training this week, before we take on Virginia Commonwealth on Friday night.”
Up next, the Cougars return home from their Midwest road swing and will play host to the four-team Charleston Cup on Sept. 6 and 8 at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Coastal Carolina will take on Kent State on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. (ET) followed by CofC versus VCU at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
