Offshore Sailors Win at Larchmont Intercollegiate Regatta

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After an impressive weekend series, the College of Charleston offshore sailing team won the J/109 class at the Larchmont Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta held in Larchmont, N.Y.
The Cougars finished with nine points through five races, including three bullets, to march on to victory against a competitive J/109 fleet that featured a mix of collegiate teams from the U.S., Canada and France. Other NCAA Division I schools in the regatta field included Rhode Island in fourth (25 points), Monmouth in 10th (44 points), Maryland in 11th (47 points), Syracuse in 12th (62 points) and William & Mary in 13th (63 points).
Sailing the CofC fleet was junior skipper Jay Greenfield, senior tactician Timothy Crann (Red Bank, N.J.), junior primary trimmer Brandon Folkman (Redondo Beach, Calif.), junior secondary trimmer Charles Essi (Lakewood, Ohio), freshman pit boss Corinne Durocher (Monroe, Mich.), sophomore mastman Howie Meyers (Bellport, N.Y.), junior mid-mast Hanna Horan (Newport, R.I.) and senior bowman Brent Burrows II (Nassau, Bahamas).
Meanwhile, the CofC women's sailing team placed a respectable third out of 18 at the Navy Fall Women's regatta hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on Annapolis Harbor in Annapolis, Md.
Senior skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and sophomore crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.) placed second behind Boston College in A-Division with nine Top 5 finishes in 15 races sailed, while senior skipper Kayla Gibson (Houston, Texas) and junior crew Charlotte Saxe (Wilton, Conn.) finished fifth in B-Division. Junior Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) was sixth in the laser C-Division.
Up in Wilmington, N.C., the CofC coed sailing team won its third North Points event of the fall against in-conference foes at the North Points #4 regatta hosted by UNCW.
The Cougars finished with just 15 points and won by a 26-point margin of victory over runner-up NC State (41 points). The Citadel, host UNCW, Georgia Tech, Duke, South Carolina, East Carolina, Auburn and Georgia rounded out the rest of the 10-team field.
Sophomore Jack Cusick (Fairfield, Conn.) skippered A-Division to a first-place finish with sophomore crew Kayla Adelman (Falmouth, Maine), while freshman Tily Milburn (Falmouth, Maine) also skippered B-Division to the same result with junior crew Katie Dowling (Coronado, Calif.).
The Cougars will travel this upcoming weekend to the Navy Fall regatta on Oct. 18-19 in Annapolis, Md., and to the North Points #5 regatta hosted by Georgia Tech on Oct. 18 in Atlanta, Ga.
