CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston offshore sailing team won the prestigious Kennedy Cup over the course of three days of racing in Navy 44's at the ICSA Keelboat National Championships hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
In what can only be described as an incredible performance, the Cougars placed first and third in Sunday's races to secure the offshore national title. CofC bested nine other schools in the field including a nine-point victory over runner-up Queens University located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
The Cougars won the 50th-annual event in challenging conditions and have now qualified to represent the U.S. in the Student Yachting World Cup to be held next October overseas in France.
“As always, consistency was key this weekend and our conservative approach from start to finish allowed us to take the win,” said team captain Brandon Folkman. “Our crew work was flawless which allowed us to put the boat where it needed to be on the race course. It was a really cool experience and a great weekend to be a Cougar.”
Sailing the offshore fleet for CofC was junior James Greenfield (Noank, Conn.), senior tactician Timothy Crann (Red Bank, N.J.), junior primary trimmer Brandon Folkman (Redondo Beach, Calif.), sophomore primary trimmer Noah Blacker (St. Petersburg, Fla.), junior secondary trimmer Stefan Kuehn (Cutchogue, N.Y.), junior pit-boss Hanna Horan (Newport, R.I.), junior mast man Charles Essi (Cleveland, Ohio), freshman mid mast Holly Deuterman (Greensboro, N.C.) and senior bowman Brent Burrows II (Nassau, Bahamas).
More postseason competition is ahead for the Cougars as they travel to three regattas this weekend at the ICSA Match Racing Nationals hosted by Seawannakha on Nov. 14-16 in New York, N.Y., the Atlantic Coast Coed hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Nov. 15-16 in New London, Conn., and the Atlantic Coast Women's hosted by MIT on Nov. 15-16 in Boston, Mass.
