CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston's Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) advanced to the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Nationals for the second year in a row with a one-two finish at the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship regatta held on Oct. 4 at the U.S. Sailing Olympic Training Center in Miami, Fla.
Cooper, a senior, and Schiff, a junior, turned in low scores of 32 points and 44 points respectively to advance to nationals to be held on Nov. 8-9 in Bellingham, Wash. Junior Sarah Mackey (Bellevue, Wash.) placed eighth at the event (93 points).
Cooper and Schiff also sailed in the SAISA Women's Fall Dinghy regatta held at the same venue on Oct. 5, which resulted in a second-place finish for the Cougars. South Florida (51 points) won the event with just a six-point margin of victory over CofC (57 points) in second, Eckerd College third (62), host Miami fourth (84) and Clemson fifth (115).
Sophomore Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) crewed A-and B-Division. USF, CofC and Eckerd all earned berths to the ACC Women's Championship to be held on Nov. 15-16 in Boston, Mass.
The CofC coed sailing team also managed a respectable Top 3 performance behind Yale and Tufts at the Danmark Trophy, a top-tier regatta that featured 20 of the best collegiate teams in the nation this past weekend in New London, Conn.
Competing for the Cougars were junior skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.), who finished fifth after a head-to-head tiebreaker with Vermont in A-Division, while senior skipper Nick Johnstone (Newport, R.I.) and junior crew Seppie McAdams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) placed third in B-Division with five Top 5 finishes through 15 races.
Up next, CofC will send its offshore sailing team to the Larchmont Offshore Invite on Oct. 10-12 in Larchmont, N.Y., its coed team to the North Points #5 regatta on Oct. 11 in Wilmington, N.C., and its women's team to the Navy Fall Women's regatta on Oct. 11-12 in Annapolis, Md.
