CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston freshman sailor Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) was crowned the national champion at the ICSA Men's Singlehanded Nationals regatta hosted by Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.
It marked the sixth all-time men's singlehanded national title in program history next to 1988, 1990, 1991, 2009 and 2012. Peschiera joins a short list of CofC greats to have won the event – the last being two-time Olympian Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala), who won the national title twice in 2009 and 2012.
Peschiera finished his national-title run scoring 15 points across the six-race series to edge Luke Muller of Stanford, who was the runner-up with 22 points. He is one of three current CofC sailors, who are currently campaigning for an Olympic bid for The Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in 2016.
Juniors Reed Baldridge (Clear Lake, Texas) and Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) also qualified for men's nationals and placed sixth and 12th respectively in the 18-boat fleet. It was Rees' second-straight appearance at nationals, while the first for Peschiera and Baldridge.
At the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Nationals sailed at the same venue in the Pacific Northwest, senior Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) finished eighth overall, while junior Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) placed 14th amongst the best college women sailors in the country. Cooper made her third appearance at nationals, while it was the second for Schiff.
