GREENVILLE, N.C. – Despite an 11-point outing from junior Erin Hall and a further 10 points from sophomore swing guard Bre Bolden, College of Charleston women's basketball fell on Wednesday night to the Pirates of East Carolina, 68-55, at Minges Coliseum.
Returning all-conference selection Mikaela Hopkins was also strong for The College (0-3), dropping eight points and grabbing seven rebounds in 22 minutes of action. As a team, the Cougars played well and shot 38.5% from the field against the Pirates (3-0) – who are just one year removed from an appearance in the WNIT – but ultimately could not overcome a 47-35 rebounding disadvantage as well as a 24-point performance from ECU's Jada Payne.
It was the home side who got out to the fast start on Wednesday, taking an early 10-2 lead following a jumper from Adria Price. The Cougars were resilient, however, closing the gap to just one at 14-13, courtesy of a nice move on the low block from Hopkins. From there, the Pirates would extend their advantage to no more than seven as both teams took to the locker rooms at halftime with the Pirates leading 33-26.
The second half again started in the Pirate's favor as the home side pushed their lead to 15 points at 49-34, with 12:58 remaining in the game. The Cougars slowly clawed their way back in to the game, cutting the deficit to just six with 7:01 to go after a deep three-pointer from Hall seemed to swing the momentum in the Cougars favor. That was as close as CofC would come though as East Carolina increased their lead from seven to 13 over the final 1:19, to send the Cougars home with a 68-55 defeat.
Next up for The College is a Sunday, Nov. 23 road showdown with former Colonial Athletic Association members George Mason. Last season the Cougars downed the Patriots 66-64 at TD Arena.
