CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball gained sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings on Saturday night, downing Elon, 3-0 in the Cougars regular season home finale.
Cara Howley led the way with 10 kills, hitting at an impressive .421 clip, while senior right-side Sloane White put away nine kills of her own. Grace Rebarchak had one of her best games of the season, notching eight kills, while setter Kallie McKown put together her league leading 21st double-double of the season. Recent CAA Defensive Player of the Week Andi Zbojniewicz was also sound, picking up a match-high 18 digs.
Indicative of the Cougars defensive prowess, the Phoenix were held to just a .016 overall team hitting percentage, while no Elon player managed more than six kills on the night.
The Cougars started the match slowly, falling behind 7-2 to the visitors early in game one. Elon's advantage would not hold, however, as the Cougars came storming back to tie the match at 9-9, before rattling off 11 of the next 15 points to take a 20-13 lead following a kill from Howley. The Cougars would eventually go on to win the set handily, 25-18.
After a 25-20 victory in game two, the Cougars again fell behind early in the third set, but managed to climb out of the hole once more, taking a 8-7 lead on a thumping kill from White. Although Elon kept it close, the result was never really in doubt and after Rebarchak terminated to put the Cougars within two, back-to-back Elon attack errors handed the Cougars the game, 25-21, and the match.
With Hofstra idle, the win – temporarily at least – moves the Cougars one match ahead of the Pride in the conference standings. After squaring off with Northeastern in Boston this Wednesday, the Cougars then head to Hempstead on Friday, Nov. 14 for the regular season finale, in what could be the title decider.
