CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's sailing team opened its spring season strong with an impressive win at the USF Women's regatta hosted by South Florida over the President's Day weekend in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Cougars out-sailed the six-team field scoring just 110 points through 12 races – proving why they are one of the top women's teams in the country. CofC beat out second-place U.S. Naval Academy (123 points), third-place and host USF (164 points), fourth-place Boston University (167 points), fifth-place Hawai'i (184 points) and sixth-place Eckerd College (188 points).
The women encountered a cold front and flat water as nine races were sailed on Saturday, but conditions improved on Sunday as the final three races were sailed in 4-6 knots of breeze with a strong flood tide.
Junior skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and senior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) placed fourth in A-Division with 59 points, while senior skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) won B-Division (51 points) with the crew of sophomore Charlotte Saxe (Wilton, Conn.) in races 1-9 and junior Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) in races 10-12.
In other weekend action, the CofC coed sailing team was represented by two squads at the home-hosted Charleston Spring Coed regatta.
The Cougars finished a respectable fourth, six points shy of second place, and 15th respectively after six races at an event that hosted 18 of the top collegiate sailing teams in the nation. UC Santa Barbara won the regatta with 67 points followed by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (73 points) in second, Boston University (79 points) in third, CofC (79 points) in fourth and Wisconsin (79 points) in fifth.
Sophomore Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) skippered the Cougars to a first-place victory in A-Division with junior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.), while sophomore skipper Kyle Sutter (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore crew Katie Dowling (Coronado, Calif.) placed 11th in B-Division for the fourth-place overall finish for CofC.
The Cougars' B team comprised of sophomore skipper Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) and senior crew Katherine Baker (Cohasset, Mass.) placed 17th in A-Division, while sophomore skipper Sarah Mackey (Bellevue, Wash.) and freshman crew Bayley Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) sailed B-Division and placed 12th.
CofC will have a week off from competition and return to action at the home-hosted Bob Bavier Team Race to be held on March 1-2 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and the North Points #2 regatta hosted by Clemson on March 1 in Clemson, S.C.
