KICKING OFF THE COUGARS…
Charleston enters the match with a 3-5-0 overall record after going 1-1 on a Rocky Mountain swing which saw the Cougars take down Omaha before falling to Colorado State in overtime last weekend.
On Friday night, battled chilly, high-altitude conditions to outlast Omaha, 1-0, on the heels of the first career goal of freshman defender Rio Speller-Drews with an assist credited to Sarah Cardamone early in the second half.
Charleston was kept off the scoreboard on the Sunday follow-up against Colorado State. CofC possessed the ball well and created opportunities to score but were thwarted at every pass. After a scoreless 90-minute regulation, the Rams netted the game's lone goal in the 94th minute.
The loss marked the third time this season the Cougars have been bested by just one goal.
The Cougars are narrowly outshooting their opponents this season by an 11.5 to 10.6 shots per game ratio, and also creating more quality shots as demonstrated by their .533 shot-on-goal percentage (compared to the .435 of their opponents).
Cardamone paces the Cougars offensively and now has three goals and three assists to her name this season.
Lauren Killian has appeared in all eight matches and goal and emerged as the clear starter over recent weeks. She now has a 1.11 goals-against average and .720 save percentage.
Killian has enjoyed consistency out of her back line with Speller-Drews, Claire Newman, Allison Sneder and Hope Walker all averaging nearly 90 minutes per game.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS…
The Citadel improved to 4-5-0 on the season after snapping a four-game losing skid with a 3-1 win over Charleston Southern on Wednesday night. Vanessa Aponte scored two goals to increase her career total to 19 and move her into fourth place in school history. Flo Amess, a graduate student in her second season in the program, posted her first goal and assist as a Bulldog.
Aponte leads The Citadel with three goals and eight points. Ana Mesa, Lea Raedle, Mady Riegel and Karina Schneider each have two goals.
Naomi Carter has a SoCon-leading 57 saves and an .803 save percentage, the third-best mark in the league. She has played every minute in goal for the Bulldogs.
