Runner-Up Finish For Cougars at Hatch Brown Trophy Regatta

CHARLESTON, S.C. – In its first major interconference regatta of the fall season, the College of Charleston coed sailing team made a runner-up finish at the Hatch Brown Trophy regatta hosted by MIT over the weekend in Boston, Mass.
Behind the veteran expertise of junior All-American skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and senior skipper Nick Johnstone (Newport, R.I.), the Cougars improved on a seventh-place finish a year ago at the annual 18-team event. Yale (277 points) won the regatta by a 98-point margin of victory over CofC (375 points) in second and Roger Williams (387 points) in third.
Reynolds and junior All-American crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) placed fourth in A-Division, while Johnstone and junior crew Seppie McAdams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) placed third in B-Division.
Senior skipper Alex Whipple and senior crew Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) also finished fourth in C-Division with three first-place finishes in race Nos. 3, 6 and 10.
Over at the three-division Nevins Trophy regatta, the Cougars matched a third-place finish in the 2013 edition of the event with 230 points behind rival Georgetown (179 points) and Harvard (211 points) in second.
Junior Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) skippered A-Division to a seventh-place finish with junior crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) in races 1-2, 5-6, 11 and senior crew Roy Shaw (Bacliff, Texas) in races 3-4, 7-10. Meanwhile, junior Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) and senior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.) missed first-place honors in B-Division (70 points) by a five-point deferential with Fordham (65 points).
In C-Division, junior Reed Baldridge (Clear Lake, Texas) won a head-to-head tiebreaker for third (63 points) sailing in the single-handed lasers. Greg Martinez of Georgetown won the division with 43 points, a tally 11 points less than Marek Zaleski of Harvard with 54 points.
The CofC women had a strong weekend with a fifth-place finish at the 18-team Mrs. Hurst Bowl regatta hosted by Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy won the event with 205 points followed by Bowdoin College (254 points) in second, Stanford (254 points) in third and MIT (268 points) in fourth.
The Cougars placed seventh in both A-and B-Divisions behind the duos of senior skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and sophomore crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) and junior crew Michaela Reynolds (Providence, R.I.).
Freshmen Claim North Points #2 Title…Four freshmen led the Cougars to victory at the North Points #2 regatta hosted by Clemson over the weekend at the Clemson University Sailing Club. In their collegiate sailing debuts, Paul Vermazen and Clare Dahl made a runner-up finish to Georgia Tech in A-Division with 16 points followed by Eliot Caple and Islay Petrie winning B-Division (6 points) by a seven-point margin over UNCW (13 points). Five races were sailed in both divisions with competitors dealing with shifty wind and breeze 4-7 knots coming from the North.
