NEWARK, Del. – Despite a 14-point outing from junior forward Jacqueline Luna-Castro, the College of Charleston women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow night defensively, falling to the Blue Hens of Delaware University, 80-49, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Shooting 54.7% from the field, Delaware registered five double-digit scorers, including Erika Brown (19) and Courtni Green (13), while also winning the battle on the glass and forcing CofC in to 17 turnovers.
For The College (4-14, 2-5 CAA), it was Luna-Castro who led the way, leading the visitor's in both points and rebounds, while seniors Erin Hall and Mikaela Hopkins each contributed offensively with nine. As a team, CofC shot 38.5%, grabbing eight offensive board and notching 13 second-chance points, but couldn't keep pace with the Blue Hens (8-10, 3-4 CAA) – eventually dropping their fifth conference game of the season.
The Cougars kept the action close in the opening stages of the first-half and a deep three-pointer from sophomore Bre Bolden with 11:23 left in the opening stanza brought The College to within three, 13-10. From there, however, the Blue Hens rattled off a12-2 run giving the home team a 25-12 lead with 7:30 remaining in the first.
Charleston came no closer than nine the rest of the way as Delaware continued to get stops and shoot the ball at a high clip, eventually leading by as many as 32 en route to claiming the 80-49 victory.
The loss drops the Cougars to eighth-place in The Colonial, one game behind both Delaware and UNCW. Positions four through eight in the CAA standings are separated by just two games.
Up next for the The College is a Sunday home matchup with 2013-14 CAA regular season and conference tournament champions, James Madison. In their most recent meeting, the Cougars shocked the eventual NCAA tournament participants, 85-78, in last season's Education Day matchup at TD Arena.
