PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A furious second-half rally came up short on Friday night as the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell on the road to second-place Drexel, 64-47, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Unable to overcome a slow start in which the Dragons held the Cougars scoreless for the opening eight and a half minutes, CofC recovered nicely and put forth a valiant second-half comeback, but were eventually undone by a hot night shooting the ball for the Dragons – including an 18 point outing from pre-season all-conference selection Rachel Pearson.
The College was led on the evening by junior forward Jacqueline Luna-Castro, who played well throughout, dropping 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Luna-Castro continued her recent string of efficient performances, shooting 60% from the floor. Also registering double figures for the Cougars was sophomore Bre Bolden, who finished the game with 10.
Following a difficult first half that left the Cougars (4-16, 2-7 CAA), trailing by 18 at the break, first year head coach Candice M. Jackson turned up the tempo in the opening stages of the second stanza. Utilizing a 1-2-1-1 three-quarter-court press, CofC were able to frustrate the Dragons, forcing three quick turnovers and closing the gap to 10, 33-23 at the under-16 media timeout. After the Dragons reasserted a 14 point advantage, it was Luna-Castro who knocked down three straight baskets to bring the visitor's within nine at the 12:26 mark.
From there, the Cougars managed to stay within striking distance, twice cutting the gap to single-digits, but eight would be as close as Charleston would come as Dragons' rattled off a late run to claim the 17-point, 64-47 victory – retaining second place overall in the CAA standings.
Up next for The College is a Sunday matinee with the Tigers of Towson University, where tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
