HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – College of Charleston equestrian finished in second place at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 5 Finals at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Ronald C. Waranch Equestrian Center on Saturday, earning The College its 25th trip to IHSA Nationals.
The Cougars posted a second place finish behind SCAD to secure a berth at the National Finals. Berry College finished third followed by Vanderbilt University in fourth. IHSA Nationals, collegiate riding's pinnacle competition, will be held at the Eastern States Exposition Center in West Springfield, Mass., April 30 – May 3.
“We are happy to be going back to the National Finals,” said head coach Bob Story. “Saturday was a little frustrating in that we didn't win a single team class, even though the team rode like champions. I feel that we had the winning rides in at least four of the eight team classes, but you can't question the judging. The riders never got down and they just kept competing at our standard of excellence and that is extremely important.”
Three individual qualifiers at the Zone Finals rode their way to Nationals in five different classes to represent CofC at the National Finals Horse Show as individuals. Senior Eliza Hay won the Individual Open Flat and Open Fences as well as representing Zone 5 Region 3 in the Cacchione Cup.
Senior Malka Fox-Epstein won the individual Intermediate Flat, with junior Kelsey LeBuhn coming in third. Junior Victoria Bauer won the individual Novice Flat and Novice Fences to qualify for the Championship Horse Show. Sophomore Hannah Robinson placed fifth in the individual Walk Trot class.
Last year, The College finished in second place amongst over 400 schools at the IHSA National Finals, earning the programs' third reserve national championship.
