MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team defeated High Point, 2-1, in its first exhibition match of the season at on Thursday evening at Patriots Point.
The match allowed head coach Christian Michner to experiment with different formations and test his players in various positions throughout the friendly. The match featured two 45-minute periods.
“I'm very proud of our players and the effort they put forth for 90 minutes,” Michner said. “In the preseason, you're really just trying to piece things together. You have a lot of players, who haven't played in a while, and new players, who are getting their first taste of collegiate soccer.”
The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period after senior midfielder Nicole Koretsky (Manalapan, N.J.) placed a beautiful shot in the back right corner of the net from outside the goal box in the 30th minute.
The College took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot, 6-4, in the first half. The Panthers opened the second half quickly with sophomore forward Michele Micciche breaking through the defense and scoring just three minutes in, to knot things at 1-1.
“Credit to High Point who is a team coming off of a conference championship last year and playing in the NCAA tournament," Michner said. "They're a team that knows how to win games, so I'm proud of our young ladies finding a way to win, while not playing our best.”
The tie did not last long after freshman forward Jessica Schifer (Aiken, S.C.) glided through the Panther defense for a point blank score in the 76th minute giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Genevieve Henderson (Jacksonville, Fla.) received all of the playing time in goal and impressed in her first start of the season. She made four saves on the night including multiple high-difficulty saves when the Panthers were on the break.
The Cougars head to Jacksonville, Fla., for their final tune-up of the preseason against North Florida on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. (ET).
The College will open regular-season play hosting the Charleston Nike Classic with its tournament opener versus Miami (Fla.) on Friday, Aug. 21, at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Patriots Point.
