RADFORD, Va. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team defeated Radford 3-0 on Sunday afternoon to complete a weekend sweep in Virginia.
"Really proud of the girls to come up to Virginia and get two hard fought wins on the road. Today wasn't an easy match and we had to have the right mentality for all 90 minutes to get the win. We weren't particularly at our best today, but it's early in the season and with so many young players we are still figuring out some things. In the end, winning on the road is always a good thing." – Head Coach Christian Michner on the Cougars victory
The Cougars (2-1) struck early in the game after freshmen forward Laura Ortega (Madrid, Spain) broke through the Highlander defense and blasted her first goal of the season in the sixth minute of play off of an assist from Riley Narum (Clearwater, Fla.). CofC entertained a 19-11 shot advantage including an 8-4 cushion when it came to shots on goal.
"We created a lot of good scoring opportunities today and were thwarted by their GK on several occasions. She kept them in the game and kept them within striking distance until pretty late on. On the first goal Riley played a fantastic ball in behind their backs to Laura Ortega who made no mistake from close range. Nicole Koretsky hit a cheeky looper over their GK off an assist from Jessica Schifer for the second. And, it was Riley Narum scoring the third after a great diagonal run and thru ball from Laura Ortega." – Michner on the team's scoring chances throughout the match
Senior midfielder Nicole Korestky (Manalapan, N.J.) busted the game open in the 70th minute by placing a rebound in the goal box high over the goalie's head to extend the CofC lead to 2-0. Junior forward Riley Narum sealed the match in the 88th minute when Laura Ortega returned the favor from the first half by setting her up on a breakaway. Narum gave CofC the third goal on the day with two minutes remaining in regulation.
The College earned its second straight victory of the weekend after defeating VCU 1-0 in overtime on Friday evening. CofC used a tandem of goalkeepers for both games throughout the road trip with Genevieve Henderson (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Lauren Killian (Blythewood, S.C.) each playing one half of both shutouts.
"Happy to be 2-0 on the weekend and giving up no goals is huge. We are stoked to be back at Patriots Point next weekend for two more tough games."
The Cougars will be in action next on Friday, Sept. 4 against Kennesaw State when they host the College of Charleston Cup at Patriots Point.
